The Chambered Nautilus

DFD's logo, the chambered nautilus, is a survivor -
and a beautiful symbol of the ongoing quest for
adaptivity and sustainability.

The chambered nautilus is the last surviving genus
of the ancient order Nautiloidea.

As it grows, the nautilus adds chambers in a
spiral pattern - about 36 of them at maturity.

The nautilus lives in the outermost chamber.
The other chambers are connected by a tube that
adjusts the gases in the chambers. Thus the shell can
float up or down, helping the organism to seek
nourishment or safety.
